About Me

My photographic life started when my Father gave me a camera for my thirteenth birthday, and we built a darkroom in the attic.

I began earning money from my photography when I was fifteen, but I could only shoot during the school holidays. Having left school at eighteen, I spent two years doing my National Service as a photographer in the RAF, mostly in a darkroom. I then spent three years studying photography at Guildford School of Art, and a further year as an assistant to an advertising photographer in London.

In October 1960 I took the plunge and opened my first Studio just off the Kings Road, Chelsea and over the next forty-two years I had three Studios in London working mostly in Advertising and Design. Also, from the middle Nineties I worked closely with several well-known picture libraries.

In 2002 I sold up my home and studio in London, moving to Winchester in Hampshire, where I opened my current Studio in 2003 just outside the City. I closed my commercial life in 2015, continuing to work on many personal projects.

These include taking considerable time over the last few years to edit, archive and produce over thirty self-published books of my work as an accessible record for my children, grandchildren, wider family and friends.

Fifty to sixty ‘Characters’ will be featured in CORNERED, my most recent ongoing project which, although postponed by the pandemic, I aim to complete by Christmas 2022.

This simple and updated website is a response to enquiries I often receive, asking where my work can be seen. It offers a comprehensive selection of images chosen from my commercial and personal work.

Enjoy the pictures,

John
